RAGE Review
2011. A good year for games. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Saints Row the Third and Modern Warfare 3 to name but a few. Sadly, several games slipped under the radar during this great season of gaming. A prime example of a game that did not receive its due was RAGE. Created by the same company who fuelled the nuclear “Fallout” franchise, Bethesda has decided to continue their road down the post-apocalyptic route in the road to RAGE.
RAGE released in 2011 by Bethesda Softworks (15), found itself hidden amongst the lesser known titles of the year. RAGE is a Post-Apocalyptic First Person Shooter that sees an ARK survivor (you) survive an impact between the earth and a giant asteroid. First impressions were just that, impressive. The fluency and beauty of the opening cutscene engulfed us into the story immediately, readying us for the adventure ahead. The music and graphics worked together to the point of perfection as the destruction of the earth as we know it appeared beautiful and full of grace. After leaving the ARK, you are graced with a Fallout-ish view of a small section of the wasteland. Watch out though, the locals tend to hide behind rocks like those…

''The limited exploration reminded us vaguely of Metro 2033''
The most obvious comparison we saw within the first 30 minutes of gameplay was that it reminded us of games we already knew and enjoyed. The graphics reminded us of 2K’s co-op masterpiece Borderlands. The exploration and immersion of the world reminded us somewhat of a first person Fable and the limited exploration reminded us vaguely of Metro 2033. However, we found ourselves longing for more. It didn’t seem to fill the hole that a competition of Fallout left us. Picking up objects was just too simple, enemies seemed a little repetitive along with aspects of the gameplay.
We found gimmicks and extras galore, with many achievements enriching our gaming experience. A variety of achievements can be found in RAGE, challenging every type of gamer to a great experience and variety including the unique ability of engineering, enabling you to construct items such as sentry bots and high tech lock picks. Gamerscore for finding jumps, getting headshots and 100% completion resulted in a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Some ranging from pure skill to pure luck. Small street gambling games such as Tombstone and Fiver Finger Fillet line the roads and streets of villages and towns you come across. Minigames fill RAGE to the brim with more for your money entertainment and bang for your buck explosions. Our favourite, was the acquiring and upgrading of a vehicle which we later used for blowing up other cars with homing rocket and miniguns along with non-lethal time trials and circuit races. Upon completion of race events, you receive racing certificates with which you can purchase upgrades for you buggy/truck to win the next race.

RAGE comes with 3 discs in total. Two for the campaign and one for multiplayer. The campaign – we expected – would span the course of two discs due to the high levels of detail and the polished finish. Multiplayer however was disappointing as the only form of competitive multiplayer was the racing side of RAGE. Regardless of how much fun blowing up people across the world with rocket launchers is, we longed for a bit of hands on action. RAGE also features co-op option permitting an extra hand in your quest to discover the truth about the mysterious Authority. Weapons range from handguns to shotguns with s sniper rifle thrown in for good measure. Also making an appearance, the Striker Crossbow, a weapon that’s both silent and deadly. Finally, the most fun we’ve ever had with a thrown weapon, the Wingstick, a boomerang related device that decapitates enemies when thrown correctly and then returns to you to then use again. Cheap and inexpensive, the Wingstick provides a silent and deadly efficient way to dispatch your enemies without alerting them and you can carry over 50 at once. Best get practicing.
''RAGE also features co-op option''
Finally, the issue about the controversy between player of the graphics. Personally, I found that the graphics fit the genre of the game very well as it allows for a deeper feeling of fantasy along with being capable to provide serious scenarios in addition to the light hearted humour we know and love from games such as Borderlands. In the end, it simply depends on your personal preference. Do you have to have your graphics as realistic impossible in order to enjoy a game or can you blend and adapt to suit the humour and fun of games like RAGE.
To sum up a great game, full of potential, capable of consuming hours for the exchange of a fun and challenging experiences. With a ton of extra’s to do along with addictive achievements, RAGE is defiantly a winner with more value for money than free hooker.
